Who We Are

Care4kidz is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families experiencing financial hardship by providing grants and scholarships for daycare and preschool services. We understand that as many parents return to the workforce, the rising cost of quality childcare has become a major challenge. Our mission is to make early learning more accessible so every child can thrive.

Our Mission

To ease the financial burden of childcare for families in need by partnering with local daycare and preschool providers, starting with A Step by Step Learning Academy and expanding throughout the Evanston area.

Our Vision

We envision a community where every child has the opportunity for quality early education regardless of their family’s financial situation, and where parents can pursue their careers with peace of mind knowing their children are in nurturing learning environments.

Our Legacy – Hecky Powell

Care4kidz proudly honors the legacy of Hecky Powell, a beloved community leader in Evanston.

• Before opening his iconic restaurant, Hecky Powell served as director of Neighbors at Work, an organization dedicated to supporting struggling families with services like low-cost meals and food assistance.

• He was deeply involved in civic life, serving as President of the Evanston NAACP and as President of the Evanston/Skokie District 65 School Board.

• Known for his generosity, Powell often provided jobs and free meals to those in need and worked tirelessly to uplift young people in his community.

• In recognition of his lifelong service, he was awarded the Key to the City of Evanston in 2014.

Through the Hecky Powell Foundation, we carry forward his vision of helping families and building a stronger, more supportive community.
